Watchdog asks Facebook, Twitter about Russians’ data localization

MOSCOW, Jan 23 (PRIME) -- The Russian communications service has sent inquiries to Facebook and Twitter regarding provision of information on localization of databases with information about Russian users, the authority’s press secretary Yelena Prokhorova told PRIME late Wednesday.

“We’re waiting for the requested information from the companies,” Prokhorova said, adding that these are standard procedures stipulated by the law.

The watchdog earlier demanded that Facebook and Twitter report on localization of databases and then fined the companies for misbehavior while giving nine months to obey. The period expired in early January.
